Which is more reliable? Dial or electronic control panel?

I am narrowing in on my new washer selection. Reliability is my top concern so I'm focused on Speed Queen. If someone could advise on whether to go with a dial or electronic control panel, I would appreciate it. Again, my concern is reliability.

Someone suggested that the dial goes to a printed circuit board anyway so it would not be more reliable and would only give a 3 year warranty rather than 5 year on the electronic panel. Is this correct?

I would appreciate knowing facts so I can make an informed decision.

Thanks so much!

Maytag machines often come with 10 year warranties. Very well built.

The warranty means next to nothing when you're discussing reliability. You could have something with crappy reliability with a 10 year warranty (or something that's reliable with a more limited warranty).

If the thing keeps failing and the warranty process sucks (or they refuse to replace it after multiple repairs), the warranty is worthless. That's especially true if a fight is required to get them to honor it. It could be 20 years long for all I care - a warranty that they only honor for repairs and refuse to replace something that can't be repaired isn't worth the piece of paper it is printed on.

@nick Not true in this case. If something is backed by a 10 year warranty that often means the manufacturer has faith in their product.

@nick I do agree with @pccheese on this and it looks like you do too (deep down there somewhere anyway;-) "The warranty issue stems back to the issue of reliability."

Mechanical panels may just wear out as quickly as their electronic counterparts. The springs and thin sheetmetal contacts in those controls are just as prone to failure. @justme99 check for consumer reports on washers and make an informed decision based on those, not based on our subjectivity.

I do agree with him to some extent about it @oldturkey03. I just think there's too much of a reliability gamble to recommend it by default, if that makes sense.

If they were as reliable as a mechanical panel (or better) then I'd recommend them without hesitation every time.
