Does anyone know why RAM is so expensive lately?

Ram is about twice as much as it it was a year ago. Is there an explanation? Look at the previous year on this stick of DDR4: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Ballistix-Sp... and this: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Corsair-Veng...

Ignore more than a year and a half ago as DDR4 wasn't selling as much then.

But look at this:

This isn't just amazon. Does anyone know what's going on?

@danj Would you know?

Sorry George don't have a clue on why. Most of the time it's supply Vs demand that sets the price.

Dan's exactly right on supply and demand. Most makers make the latest stuff, stock then move on to the newest thing on the block. Then it's a matter of supply and demand. the 5300 DDR2 sticks have gone way up as people try to upgrade their older Macs.. Now that Apple is putting it all on the motherboard, I have no idea of what will happen to RAM. It may quickly become a thing of the past, just like the 3.5" hard drive and soon the 2.5" hard drives.

Too bad. When building PC's now I'll have to consider that a major component in terms of cost. 16GB is about the price of an i3.

Can you use 800MHz memory on the older Macs that use DDR2? I know you can do that on many PC's and it will downclock the memory unless the system is old enough to not support that.

The majority of the systems I get that need hard drives are not always 800MHz ready, but will downgrade to the highest speed that is supported. I think I only have one remaining system like that and that's probably going to be put on the chopping block if I have to make room.
