Change in how to edit what device sucks big time

OK, you have now changed how to edit a device and complicated the !&&* out of it.

I need to change this device from the 13" to the 15" but you've made it so complicated I can't get it done. Normally all I would have to do is change the 3 to a 5 and have it.

https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/Edit/4348...

But no, you want me to jump through hoops to get done. Let's see if you can do it, whomever made this change. Maybe @evan knows who did this. I normally have to change 4-5 devices a day, so I want to know who to send these jobs to now, because I'm not going to do it. Just who's responsible?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I managed to get it done.

Hey Mayer,

We appreciate your feedback, but I don't think we need to play the blame game. We're always working to improve the site. Some of the changes we deploy might be better than others, but that's just part of the learning process. Sometimes we'll make mistakes, sometimes we'll have bugs on the site—because we're not perfect.

Thankfully, we have awesome community members to provide us with feedback. We take your feedback seriously, but we're a small team moving as quickly as humanly possible—so please stay patient with us. If we have a shot at fixing the world, we're going to have to work together to do that. Sooooo channel your inner Southern Gentleman and give us a break ;) Dom's team works too hard to put down their efforts.

My mistake, I now see that Mike has also run into this too. Please advise us when the roll out is complete. Change in device description very tedious

by

I'm in the middle - I picked up on it quickly but it's nowhere near as convenient as the old way of doing it. The main problem I had was I had to remember certain details about the device to avoid picking the wrong one, so it is error prone.

@mayer let's all take a deep breath! I have trouble with this upgrade since I believe that not all devices have been listed. Some are probably hidden in some sub-menu somewhere. We know from the past that change on Answers has never been easy and we always worked our way around it. @nick "I picked up on it quickly" good for you but the issue here is that it is cumbersome. Reflect on how many changes you have made on devices in Answers compared to people like @mayer . Let's wait for @entendu 's version 2.0. Let us consider this to be a work in progress. People, we are here to provide a service to real people out there. Let us not forget what the task at hand is "Together, we can fix the world! " It does not say lets B*tch and Bellyache about changes. We all need to stop our negativity. What is the worst that could happen? @sam and @evan will have to work overtime (which will come out of @entendu 's budget;-) to fix this. The iFixit team has given us a place to meet and an opportunity to help others by sharing our knowledge. How they do it and how they update it, is none of our business. @mayer lets go my friend. Let's go and do what we do best, helping others fix their stuff!

Hey Mayer, I think this would be easier for you if the current device were selected when you clicked "change". We're working on doing that now!

YOU try it first and you'll see why it sucks.

I think you may have misunderstood -- we're making a change to the feature which I believe will make it easier to use for you (and everyone else). Will let you know when it goes out!

by

I'm sorry, I don't like this new pop-up either. It would be fine if you had a choice, but now you must use it. I can imagine its usefulness when asking a question, but not when editing.

@entendu - Domenic, Sorry this isn't working. I'm noticing a lot of people are just selecting the root not the proper system and it's a pain when you do know the hierarchy and just want to plug it in the old fashion way.

I understand were you are trying to go here. As people are littering their post every which way with no rhyme or reason.

Getting to the where they OP posted their question is a good step forward. Is it possible to give the mods the old way? As its quicker for us to navigate.

Can we try adding synonym's for the different systems and using that offer up a short list that the person can click on? Like how EveryMac does it:

- Order Number (Example: MA970B/A, MB467LL/A, or MD093E/A)

- Model Number (Example: A1278 or M8493)

- EMC Number (Example: 2254 or 380B)

- Model Identifier (Example: MacBook5,1)

- Serial Number (Example: W88401231AX or C02CG123DC79)

- Intel processor ID (Example: P8600 or 4980HQ)

While I realize this only works in Apple stuff it would be a start.

@entendu worked with it over the weekend and it is not to bad, if the device has a home in the menu. If it is a device that does not have its own listing, we will continue to use the closest menu. It'll be up to you then to create the individual device within the menu.

If all the information is there it works pretty slick.

Hey gang! From an old-time-site-user this is probably pretty jarring, sorry about that! But we're really trying to make the new-user experience easier and prevent "bad" devices like "dropped my ipone in the toilet" from happening so that people can get related questions and answers all in one place. There's definitely gonna be some growing pains and things we didn't think about, so we appreciate you working through this with us!

@sam - I don't mind the shock ;-} Its more of how we need finish editing the OP's post as I'm seeing a few so far that just drop them at the root of the systems like iMac 27"

by

Yeah that was definitely an unexpected wrinkle! =(

by

@sam for version 2.0 just expand the final device column and use a common nomenclature for the devices. Let's keep it simple and the UI slick.

by

It'd be fine if there was a button in the corner that allowed us to use the old search.

@entendu - Domenic, We appear to have lost the edit for the device when you go into altering it.

As an example this person selected the wrong device as he couldn't find his: HOW TO UNLOCK MY PHONE SAMSUNG GT-E1272? Not a Samsung GT-E2120.

I went in to alter it to the correct one, as I couldn't find it I tried to create new one from the device choice pane only to find out I couldn't. I then ended up creating a stub manually but I still couldn't pick it from within the Question.

Others are leaving the choice at a lower level. So they never see the guides. We need to fix this soon!

I was having this problem earlier too, as you can see under in my comment @entendu's answer.

by

@entendu Is there anyway to use the old system until you get the bugs worked out? I can't do my job. Most of the time when I'm trying to change a device I don't have the information I need from the OP or we don't have guide for that specific model so we have to extrapolate. You know maybe there is a guide for the 13" but not the 15". While your intent was to simplify it is to restrictive right now and doesn't let me move around or guess or explore what options I have. If I can't do that I can't get an answer to the OP. Please give at least the moderators some flexibility.

by

We're aware that you can't add a device if it matches a similar model in searching. It's an unintended bug.

We're working on it. These things take time. Imagine trying to add another leg to a table b/c it's wobbly on the floor and not make it look weird.

Making it "just available for you" is probably as much work or more than actually fixing the problem.

We've greatly reduced the number of "orphan" devices without reducing the number of questions asked. This frees up employee time to do other things, so some of this effort is successful.

We thank you for your patience as we attempt to solve problems in innovative ways.
