People without knowledge or experience with regard to repairing/maintaining electronic or electrical devices most probably just think that to clean it you do it as you would for anything else that you clean.

People who do this aren't stupid they are ignorant. That is they lack awareness about something, in this case how to clean electronic equipment. The OP had enough awareness that it shouldn't be immersed in water but that was about all. You can't have knowledge about everything. Just contemplate how much you don't know about say... (I don't know, pick a subject that you don't know about but perhaps may interact with from time to time. Got one and don't cheat .. do you know the correct procedure on how to fill a spare gasoline tin from a pump in a gas station - you are driving a pickup truck and the tin is temporarily secured in the truck bed which has a plastic liner? If you know the answer great but just think about all the people who mightn't and still fill their spare gas cans the incorrect and unsafe way.

Now if the OP was just ignorant he could choose to learn about what happened and why and hopefully not make the same error again. If he was stupid he wouldn't have the intellect to realize his error and would continue to make the same mistake again and again in the belief that the next time it would be correct.

You may not have heard of this happening before as a lot of people would not admit publicly to doing it, proving that they were ignorant but not stupid.
