The Pro Stand is $999.

An Adapter for use with VESA is $199. it is an adapter and an adapter only.

Oh and one more thing, to top it all off:

Apple had a special tool for the base iMac (not the iMac Pro) (when you could add a VESA mount yourself) and old Cinema Display as well. You had to use a plastic card, although it could be substituted with a plastic card in lieu of not having the one included with the Apple VESA mount.

This is not abnormal for Apple. You don’t have this issue on non Apple monitors since they either use a nonstandard stand but allow for screw based VESA mounting or a VESA derived stand from the factory in lieu of a nonstandard one.
