@danj Wow that’s awesome! I knew that they were going to use recycled materials for the Olympic medals, but I didn’t think they would be collecting used electronics from the citizens. On top of that, they look amazing! Have you heard of the rest of the eco-friendly initiatives they’re following for the 2020 Olympics? They’re planning to use renewable energy for the entire duration of the Olympics, which has never been accomplished by any other host country. Pretty neat if you ask me!

@jogihara - Had a chance to read through part of the 'Sustainability Plan' They are so far out in front its not even funny! They are using recycled clothing for uniforms! How cool! Now if we can get our country to recycle even half of what they are doing from coast to coast.

@danj Right? It's insane how far ahead they are compared to the US. My family and I were thinking of going to visit family and the Olympics, but we decided that it's just going to be too crowded and hot. We've been to Japan during the summer (our one and only time going in the summer) and although it was fun, I'd rather much go during spring or winter when the weather is much more bearable. Luckily the Olympics are coming to Los Angeles in 2028 so we'll probably be able to attend during then. Hopefully California will follow a similar eco-friendly plan as the Japanese for the 2028 Olympics!

@jogihara Part of my reluctance to back recycling more often is more to do with waste - in the sense of repairable devices that the owner doesn't want to try to repair first. I get why you'd recycle an A1181 with a questionable motherboard (especially an early one) and persisting thermal issues, but most of it is worth fixing if the costs are reasonable. I had the same problem with C4C back in the day - so much waste for no good reason. Many (but not all) recycling facilities don't give the devices to folks who can fix them, even if you look at it and know the problem is a cheap and easy fix - but if you can get a good relationship with someone there, you may be able to ask for what you want if they know you wouldn't say no.

The issue is many people rely on someone else's word and base it on that. For all they know, it's a misdiagnosis you can fix with a $10 hard drive cable. Sometimes the devices are a total loss for something minor as well, where you can still use the remaining parts or potentially strip them out yourself and make a few bucks off of what is effectively a total loss.

@jogihara - it will be hot in LA too ;-{ Where is your family located?

It you spend your time in the mountains in the Nagano its not bad!

We took a bullet train down the Fuji and climbed Mt Fuji for our holiday. We did the Fujinomiya Trail we only got about half way as we ran out of time before we had to get back to work. We were not pushing our selves just having a good time meeting people on the trail at the different lodges.

@nick Yea definitely. It also doesn't help when the US has been shipping off our recycled waste to countries like China and others in Africa. On top of that, more cities are going to be reluctant to recycle with the ban from China, are more are burning their waste instead of recycling it.

@danj My family in Japan resides in Kiryu in Gunma-ken, the prefecture neighboring Nagano actually! I haven't hiked Mt. Fuji at all, but it must've been beautiful walking up it! Are you planning to go back sometime again soon? Hopefully you'll have time to hike the whole trail next time :)
