Alternative to A+ certification

With Comptia putting their support against the right to repair bills. It would be useful to have a competing certification HR managers and Job descriptions could list.

I noticed you have the “iFixit MasterTech Certification”. Is there any possibility of having another cert for general computer repair to compete with the A+ certificate. Add hands-on like you do with the “iFixit MasterTech Certification” and it will instantly be better.

@kristen - Its clear CompTIA has lost its way!

We need to establish an alternative or correct CompTIA thinking!

That’s a fair idea!

We were able to convince CompTIA this weekend to stop lobbying against Right to Repair. So that’s a big win!

I agree, we need more modern and better certifications. Expanding Master Tech is certainly something that we are considering.

@kyle - Thats great news!

My mouth dropped when I heard their rep completely dumped all repair professionals to the lions at the Washington hearing!

@danj It doesn't change the permanent stain on their already iffy reputation though. CompTIA is known to be useless but it's only a problem because HR people are too lazy to look at it and think it still has value. All it does is give you a piece of paper since the stuff on the tests and recert program covers ancient hardware. You're literally better off renewing it under their training program and being done with it.

We won't see them die off as a requirement until people who get it make hiring decisions.

@nick - I don't disagree! They have been sitting on a money machine and have not maintained their skills material.

Even still you can't win the war battling someone who would be a better ally than siding on the other side.

Kyle's efforts converting their thinking so we have them siding with us is the important thing here!

by

@danj It's passive income by doing nothing at best. At worst it's potentially giving them money to change their mind again.

As long as they never do is again they can keep their useless money tree. Do it again and your tree is dead.

@kyle - Good news this week! Hawaii & Massachusetts 'Right to Repair' moves forward!

I know you and the rest of the iFixit team have put in a lot of effort into making this happen.

We still have a few more steps! The full vote and then the governor signing the bill here in Boston is all thats left! So don't rest yet!

And a big Thank You!
