How strong are the hinge magnets?

I'm curious if one can dangle the iPad 2 by holding onto only the cover? ie. open cover hang iPad 2 while only holding the cover...

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I found my answer in a thread in MacRumors:

While not the safest looking scenario, the magnets ARE indeed strong to support the weight of the iPad.

By your comment to Majesty you are saying this is not a repair related question.

No, this was a question about the tear down iFixIt did... and more of an "avoiding repair" by "avoiding damage" question I suppose.

You might want to read on here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,238... and some more here and here are people wondering about the same so it appears that the magnet in the ipad are relatively weak and would not make for a good hoverboard. So personally I would not attempt your science experiment ;-)

Interesting reading oldturkey03. A quote from one of your sources. "We just can't keep these things off of one another! The iPad 2's frame magnets made a solid two inch leap across the table by the time we took the shot. Their attraction for one another is amazing," iFixit said.

yes sort of like the magnet in your kitchen cabinets ;-)

Are u asking for a scientific measurement of the polarity/strength of the magnets? Theyre obviously just strong to engage the case, but not strong enough to damage any components inside. There's a question right under this one which is similar.

To clarify. No I'm not "worried" about about the magnets damaging anything, even hard drives rely on such powerful magnets at extremely short distance most magnent applied directly to the outside of a hard case would have no effect.

I'm just wondering if the iPad could be lifted off a table by the cover, and if one accidentally grabbed the cover and lifted if the iPad would dangle, or drop to the floor. Strictly a curiosity question.
