Question about the Manta kit

So.. I was one of the lucky winners in the Show and Tell contest.
I have been using it every single day since I received it, and I have never had a better experience with a kit than this!

But I have a question: When using the small driver, the magnetism "travels" to the bit and magnetizes it to help with picking up the screws. The large driver though, does not? There is only a minute amount of magnetism forwarded, barely enough to slightly stick to a screw, not even enough to pick up the smallest screw I have, to test.

Is it supposed to do this? I don't really mind, but sometimes I have to use another driver with a magnetized tip to pick up screws from where I can't get my fingers..

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@geirandersen

I don’t have a manta kit but I have seen people with the same question

I wonder if you can manually magnetise them by using one of those tools for it:-)

Thanks:-)

@hellomacos Yeah, if this is the way it's designed I'll be getting a new magnetizer / demagnetizer doo-hickey. My old one has lost it's "charm" and they're cheap and plentiful.

@geirandersen

I wonder if you could use a electro magnet?

Mine was fine and didn’t have that problem outside of two screws which were not magnet friendly when I had to check my Dell out after a spill. It sounds like the driver may have an issue.

@nick My first thought (when I used it on the very first screw) was that the screw wasn't magnetic, but I used a regular old driver and it picked up the screw fine. The small driver is absolutely fine, but just for fun I took one of the small bits and placed in the big driver (the magnet holds it in place fine, but no magnetism is forwarded.

My next "idea" was that bits were of an alloy that defers magnetism, but since the small driver and bits are absolutely fine, that was shot down.

@geirandersen The silver screws didn't pick up, but I think Dell uses non magnetic screws near the USB-C port, but I used the small driver. @amber may have a better answer.

Looking into it! Please stand by.

@amber My small driver was fine outside of the USB-C port screws Dell loves to use, but those are long enough it's a non-issue and it's a problem due to the material not being magnetic, not the driver for those two. I mentioned you to be sure.

Yes, I'm using the laptop since I checked the motherboard over and fixed enough of the keyboard to put it back together while I wait for my replacement.

by

@amber No worries :) I have tested using a magnetizing tool, and that magnetizes the bits enough to pick up screws!
