In general, the platform works very well through the permissions users get as they gain reputation: https://about.ifixit.com/Wiki/Reputation....

On top of that, we're lucky enough to have found a couple of people who go the extra mile to write content and answer questions that help folks fix their stuff. In addition, moderators keep an eye out for spam and duplicates, for example, and have additional permissions to take care of those.

We are constantly looking for more people who'd like to help us keep the site running smoothly, dedicating their expert knowledge and care, especially for the foreign language subdomains. There isn't (yet) a clear process or set of criteria, our current moderators really are hand-picked so to say.

As a minimum, we agreed that we'll want to make sure our moderators have been on the platform long enough to know it like the back of their hands, and that they've already gained the trust of other members (e.g. when we get a recommendation). If you feel that you have that, and you're interested, shoot us an email over at community@ifixit.com so that we can get to know each other better!

It's actually pretty individual for now. We'd usually find out more about motivation, areas of interest, previous experience and so on in private conversations. Of course, we'd also discuss the community guidelines. These conversations will ultimately give both sides a solid ground to decide whether the permissions already gained by reputation points are actually enough in order to do what one is most interested in, or if additional permissions for moderation or rather something else (for example author's rights) would be the perfect fit.
