Add deeper links to repair manuals from the home page

I've contacted you about this before when your organization changed, but after many months I feel there has been no improvement. The site used to be very very easy to navigate, but now is is not the case! Please do something about this. Is it really so hard to go back to navigation that at the very least allows the user to search by brand, then model and then version/ year if release??? I certainly can't seem to... Hey maybe it's me or maybe it your over cluttered and badly structured home page?

Update

Faster and more direct access to brands and products is what's needed. Not having this was the core of my user problem.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Please expand more on exactly how you'd like it to work, and we're happy to work on it!

This could use fixin' http://meta.ifixit.com/View/231/The+%22t.... I will look at the code and make a suggestion RSN.

What are you looking for? Are you having difficulty finding things? Is it just too many clicks to get to something? We had to change our navigation structure to allow more than just Apple devices.

I agree, the old navigation was so much easier in many respects (especially the home page, no more big links with the sections.

Any specifics? What pages are you having trouble getting to?

I don't have trouble myself so much, as I use bookmarks. But when I go to the main page, it takes a minute to find stuff, it's not as intuitive as the old design with the big links. They're now hidden in the corner.

I understand the bookmark scenario (I have most of the urls I need memorized...) but any user that can specify a start and an end point that was difficult for them to follow, makes our job of improving the UI easier. Four out of five times something doesn't get improved because someone in the company thinks it is the best way to do it. If our users tell us differently, we can put more effort and time into perfecting it.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the slow reply. Way too many clicks to get to specific items, example trying to find a certain tear-down. Home page too cluttered.

I've got loads of comments for you, I just need to get them into an email. One way of making my points would be to try and find an older version of your website in the net archived and then point out how that design is better than the current version.

I think the main problem you have atm is the lack of direct access to parts of the site. If I were you, I would have for example four images on the front page, one image for each part of the site that users need, tear-downs, parts, manuals etc instead of hiding them at the edges of the home page.... I want to go into more details about what would happens when you click on the these links, but I'm in the studio now and I've got loads of layout work to get done, good old Indesign.

Reply soon,

Chris

That's how it used it be, I preferred that layout.

Don't send an email. Post it in your question so everyone can see it and respond. But thanks for the feedback anyway! Keep it up! It's very useful to us.

by

We're certainly open to feedback. I would note that the redesign simplified the home page to call out links to the things you're mentioning: repair manuals, parts, and troubleshooting. Each has an icon calling it out. What I really think people want is a faster way to get directly to specific devices: Mac, Nintendo Wii, etc.

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://ifix... that is an archive of ifixit's pages. Enjoy! (I would of made the link a click through but there was an asterisk)

Kyle, I totally agree that faster and more direct access to brands and products is whats needed, not having this was the core of my user problem.

If you want to talk to a good consultant about improving your information architecture and layout, let me know. I have a good contact. No, this guy isn't a designer or coder, this guy sees the big picture across all technologies and industries and understands modular growth and best business practices etc.
