What voltage does the battery give out?
I'm not sure how we should respond here.
This sounds a bit creepy given what is being asked. It could be innocent, but then again, this could be deadly depending on what the 'Project' is.
Should someone speak to some higher authority here?
I don't think it's a creepy question. He's probably working on a hobby electronics project and would like to repurpose a power supply.
I made a small portable moving platform once out of an old PC CD drive, and it would have been an improvement to power it off a laptop battery instead of the AA cells that I used.

My fear was he was stripping out the guts of the laptop and putting something else in its place. Today you have to think a bit more sadly.
