Older guides on death row

Being I mostly have my big guides I have been trying to make happen mostly finished if not finished, I had time to look at some of my old guides and figure out what I can let go of. As always, mention objections and I'll look into it.

First up: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/%28Permanen...

The reasons for putting this up is:

  • The format. This was when I tried to make this format work, and I never could. I ended up unpublishing it in a month and never going back. It was never going to work at the time, and I decided to leave it behind
  • It's just not possible to recover this guide. The most practical way would be to break the components up individually and go from there; once that was done this would be here anyway.
  • This system is known for bad caps and is old. It's not worth trying to find another example of this system. It's nearly impossible to find a good example.
  • This machine died of bad caps shortly after I got it. I haven't had it in years.
  • Text needs to be replaced outright. There's no way to recover the existing text.
  • Pictures all have problems. On top of text issues, it also has picture issues.
  • That fan retrofit. EEK! It not only did nothing but proved to be a hazard. 5 years can really be useful to see how bad some of these ideas were.

There really isn't much I can do to salvage this one. I'd need to break it up and put it here anyway, so why not end it?

2nd guide up for deletion and a offer: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/%28Permanen...

Now, for the list of issues.

* Picture quality/text quality

* I need to rework almost everything on this one. I may as well make a new guide.

* Fair amount of flags. Most are not good.

Now, for some good points and a saving chance I will put up.

* It got rid of the scheme from the last guide, so it isn't prone to THAT issue.

* Descent pictures, but could be better

Now, for this one I can see some room to save it. If someone has a 4300s laying around, I would be willing to give you guide access to revive the pictures. I will handle the intro and text if this happened and start over for you and all you need to do is put up some new pictures. Please do not buy one of these just for the chance to do it. It's not worth it. Only do it if you have one on hand or can get it for free. I don't want to see or hear about you spending money on a 4300s just to do this.

I'm not going to pick another 4300s up just for this guide. They are too troublesome for me and I don't mess with P4's anymore; it would be eWaste when I was done with it. I don't want to buy one and then set it aside as eWaste.

This offer will last a month. If I do not hear anything I will assume that there are no takers. At this point, I am going to retract this offer and put it up for deletion without this offer.

The third guide up for deletion is this one: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/%28Permanen...

This guide has the following problems:

  • This was my attempt at reviving the format I used with the 4300s. As expected, it didn't work.
  • The intro needs the most help. Text is mostly fine, with small problems.
  • The pictures all need help.
  • Step 4 is a bit clumsily explained. This falls under the category of text that needs help.
  • Reassembly instructions really aren't needed. I could remove them, but I see no reason
  • The big one: I have split the guides up into 2 dedicated guides for each. It went a lot smoother then this one did.

Since we can't see the guide, there's not much to say.

Try now. I think I think I fixed the issue. If not, I can try something else.

These guides may not be up to your standards of today, but they sure beat nothing if you're trying to do a repair! Leave them up.

That's true. I can probably at least do a *partial* recovery seeing as I no longer have the 4300s, which went unstable due to the bad caps. If I really do end up needing new pictures, a dead example I can use for new guides to deal with these is probably a easy find. While I know the problem and how to repair it I choose not do due to the age of the system. If I have to, I'll look for one with bad capacitors.

@nick A guy sent me a 128k original Mac to repair this summer, and I did a very good job on it. He sold it for $1500. You never know.
