Looking for Tuesday Tech Tips

Hey everyone! I'd like to post quick tech tips on our social media accounts.

Stuff like this: https://twitter.com/make/status/88662407...

Or maybe quirky things like this, but less dumb and hackish: https://twitter.com/eSpares/status/88736...

If you can link me to some of your favorite answers or drop quick tips here that'd be great! Tips could be related to anything from smartphone repairs to household fixes, but be sure to keep the tips short and sweet. (Twitter posts have limited characters.) I'll be fishing through popular answers and blogs to make a list as well. If you have a twitter handle and would like to be credited for your tips let me know and I'll be sure to tag you when I post. Thanks everyone!

Update (07/25/2017)

I'm thinking of something more along the lines of....

-Just because your waterlogged phone comes back to life after putting it in a bag of rice, doesn't mean the rice fixed your phone. It didn't. You're just lucky.

-When replacing the bulb in your car's headlight, wear gloves! The oil from your hands leaves a residue that causes hot spots that burn out the bulb.

-Use a coke can and a rubber band to hold your iPhone 5 display open while replacing the battery.

-Device not charging? Try cleaning out the port with an ESD safe tool. We bet you've got some dust bunnies hiding in there.

-When troubleshooting {thing} be sure to check for...

-When replacing the {thing} on your {device} try... or remember to always ...

This could also be an opportunity to dispel some repair myths ( like the bag of rice thing).

All these social posts are intended to bring people back to iFixit, so the tips we offer should link back to resources we have on the site if possible. Thanks again everyone!

@mayer I think you included the wrong link. Is this what you're referring to?

@evan Yes, thats' it, or close enough.

This is awesome! I'd be happy to share it if it was a guide on our site. I like the idea of recommending ways to repurpose potential e-waste. Thanks @mayer !

Next tip: When ordering the SSD blade upgrades from OWC, there are two options. One is just the blade, the other includes a Envoy external case. The external cases are relatively cheap when ordered with a blade but sell for high dollar on eBay. Reason is people need the cases to pull a blade to get the data off when a machine is damaged. Personally. when doing the upgrade my customer has no use for the old blade. So i keep it, put it in the enclosure and have it set up for diagnostics and system installations. There are three different enclosure for the three types of Apple blades. Their pricing is somewhat erratic as I've gotten the cases for as little as $10 over the cost of just the blade to $60. So you need to be a shopper on these. here's an example:

Same with these WD external HDDs:

Get this and get a free USB to SATA adapter with your HDD.

Now can I get that tip summarized in 140 characters? Like... The @Mayer of iFixit says: When upgrading your SSD, keep old blades in an external case to offload data or run diagnostics in the future.

by

@kelsea That really doesn't convey the idea. But i did not understand until now that you wanted a tweet (which I have refused to do). Now that I know what you want, I'll see what pops up and get back to you. Does it have to be misspelled, politically incorrect and controversial to be valid as a tweet?

by

@kelsea how's this?

137 characters:

Use old pill bottles when repairing computers to organize. Separate into case, and specific assemblies. Put tops on to prevent spillage

by

@mayer I'll post these on facebook & twitter. Twitter has a character limit, but facebook doesn't, so I just try to stick with 140 characters so it'll work for both. The using old pill bottles is a great tip!
