12 Character Limit On Comments

So we introduced this minimum character limit a few weeks ago. How do you feel about it? Have comments gotten better overall? Should we increase the limit? Decrease it? What are your thoughts?

In my opinion about 6 seems right for a required comment. If a person feels the need to expand further I believe they will. Most of the time a comment is to indicate agreement with an answer or to provide additional info. YMMV

I feel it's overreaching- I don't see what it does to help, all it does is prevent me from commenting something like "+"

+ sometimes its a real pain, you have nothing further to add, but just want to sign that it's you who agrees with advice or you appreciate the work in the answer

I like it. I don't get the need for hundreds of pointless "+" comments, that's what the up vote button exists for.

+ for Rab. I see you no longer count spaces. boo. Sometimes I just want a quickie. Other times I get cut off on long answers. I don't see the purpose of either limit. Please don't tell me how to do my job.

I implemented it purely because I have yet to hear a valid argument for comments that consist of '+'. I think 'agreed +' is just as bad. If you don't have something substantial to contribute to a conversation, why contribute at all?

If I'm a newbie to the site and I get an answer that have a couple of + votes from reputable contributors I would be much more likely to accept that advice. I've also see some very bad advice with just upvotes from contributors unknown. Also a upvote from a high rep guy for a new contributor gives his answer validity and encouragement. Beside so few people vote on answers it's pathetic. I don't vote on questions when I don't know if the answer is correct or not, but the knowledge base around here does not warrant so few votes.

Mayer, I agree with you. What would you change to make it so people are more likely to vote, and that it's more obvious when high-rep users agree?

by

i think what mayer says is spot on. as a newbie i like knowing the answer i'm looking at has been agreed by someone with a good rep. equally the up vote/down vote and who put it on your respone is feedback. as you say yourselves..... feedback always welcome.

by

I still don't see how a + is valid though. If I'm on the site, and a newbie, I'm not going to click through to everyone's profile. All I see is some guy named mayer put a + on a single answer. Why not write a sentence or two and explain why it is a good answer, or why you agree with the commenter? Sure it takes more time, but it contributes a whole lot more to the conversation.
