What am I missing in uploading images?

I am trying to write my first repair guide and linking the images is not working for some reason. It tells me that I need to be logged in first, but I am.

I found the following guide concerning the needed specs for images and I believe that my test photo now meets those specs.

I also found this note about OpenID, but I don't use it (I think) so not sure what is going on. I log into iFixit with the button on the top of the page. Is that OpenID by default?

My test picture is 1024x768 in size. It is a .jpg file format that is 79.6KB in size. Each time I try and upload this photo the dialog box tells me that I need to be logged in first. I have logged out and back in. Same error in all the browsers that I have tried.

I have tried this with Firefox Ver 3.6.12 as well as Chrome and get the same results. Only have IEv6 so that won't work period.

What am I missing on this process that is not allowing me to upload photos? Assume it is a noob mistake but don't see it. Thanks for any help.

Update

ok, I am not sure what is going on. I was able to try this on another computer and I was able to upload files. I am using Google Chrome on both computers.

Broke computer - Chrome Version 8.0.552.215

Working computer - Chrome Version 7.0.517.44

Going to update the working computer and see what happens to this whole process.

Update

Ok, The working computer is now at Chrome Version 8.0.552.215 and I can still upload photos. The only other difference I see right now is that the broke computer is on Windows XP Pro and the working one is Windows 7 Enterprise. Not sure how that would impact any of this. Let me know if there is anything else I can check between the two. (Wish the Windows7 box wasn't a pain and freezing every few minutes.)

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

When you click the link at the top of the page, you're using OpenID only if you click either "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Yahoo" on the login screen. I saw that you'd tried uploading multiple photos and still had the problem - have you tried uploading single photos, excluding the one that is giving you problems? (AKA it's a long shot, but is it possible that there's something wrong with just that photo?)

I have tried single photos as well at this point. Also a new image all together and I still get that same problem.

Bug tracked down and squashed!

just a little idea but can you move the button for photo's up the page? nearly committed a crime against the computer trying to drop and drag until I stumbled across the upload.... might just be me, but as the edit buttons etc are all top right why is it extreme bottom left?

We have seen this issue once or twice before, but it's very rare. We use flash to enable the fancy uploader (HTML, prior to version 5, doesn't allow uploading multiple files at once). I suspect that somehow your flash isn't sending us your login cookie.

One workaround is to disable flash on that computer. That will make the uploader fall back to our clunkier plain-vanilla upload, which should work for you.

Another option would be to try upgrading flash on your computer. I am interested in what version you've got now.

We hope to build an HTML5 file uploader so we don't need flash anymore, but that will only work in Chrome / Firefox / Safari.

Update — Fixed!

We've tracked this down to a bug in certain versions of flash. We were able to compensate for the bug on our end, so you should be able to upload images from all your computers now. Thanks for the persistence!

Well I do see a difference with the version of Adobe Flash player on the two computers.

Broke one has version 10.1.103.19.

Working has version 10.1.103.20.

I tried to update the broke computer's Flash version but Chrome said it would take care of that on its own as needed, so I switched to Firefox and tried a update that way. I downloaded the 'new' version (10.1.102.64 it said?) and updated it but the version on the broke computer says the same version still. Not sure what is up with that. I used the following url to find out my version of Flash player. That web site also has a table listing the latest versions for each of the different WEB 'environments' and Chrome should be at 10.1.103.19. So the computer that is working has the newest (unpublished?) version of Flash player it appears.

Thank you very much for the detail, Phillip. I'll see what I can do to reproduce this on a machine here.

I have successfully reproduced this in Chrome 8 on Windows XP! Thanks again for the level of detail. We're working on a fix.

Cool, glad it was useful. I have gotten all my photos uploaded for my first repair guide and it is published now. Hopefully this bug can be fixed and it will keep others from having the same problem in the future.

Hmm this is indeed strange.

When you launch the uploader, does it look something like this?

Block Image

And after you upload an image it should show you something like:

Block Image

Those are the screens I see, but I get the error on the second screen not the success that yours shows. I would attach a photo showing the error, but I am in a catch-22 and can't.

For me instead of showing the filename and a small image of the picture I get a red yield sign with a '!' in the center of it. Under the filename it says 'You must me logged in to upload'. There is no 'Done' text and no 'Crop Image' text. The green bar on the right does give me a progress as it tries to upload the image. It gives me total size of images if I link more than 1, and it also says 'Upload Complete', but nothing has happened, I have no photos.

Wow, alright. That's not good at all. I'll look into it.
