Do you think people are being too overzealous with voting to accept?

It seems to me people are voting really quickly to accept answers. I thought the original intention was if the poster didn't know how, or abandoned the question, but it seems people are really quickly voting to accept answers. Now, I don't mind getting all these points, but doing it before the OP has a chance to respond doesn't assure that the answer actually solved his/her issue.

What do you all think?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Also- keep in mind people, there isn't a problem with waiting, so what if someone gets 30pts now or next week or next month, there's exactly 0 harm in waiting

I've noticed recently that you can no longer approve an answer in the short term which is a good idea. This new system will give the OP an opportunity to verify an answer works.

I think you're right. People are voting pretty soon. Maybe we shouldn't let people vote to accept for a week or 15 days or so? Thoughts?

Well it's generally a few people who frequent around here, if we establish guidelines for when it's appropriate i think that'll work. I think what we need to think of are guidelines- any ideas? Generally if the OP indicated the answer worked, or it's been a while and they never returned, stuff like that...

by

As one of those people who frequent I am sure that I would follow any guideline you would care to set. That said and with new people joining all the time if its not terribly difficult to program I would think a delay of one month before accepting an answer would be a good idea. That is the guide I will use from now on in any case to give the OP time to respond.

Putting a limit on how soon an answer can be voted to be accepted seems like a good idea to me.

please... it seems like people are voting waaay too soon.

I was trying to hold out for a month but with so few people moderating the list was growing by leaps and bounds. We need more people to participate so we can keep the list at no more than 3 or 4 pages--even at that it takes quite a while to go through them. I will attempt once more to hold out for 30 days on accepting answers unless the count starts going above 8 or more pages again. It would help if everyone who can moderate would do it at least once a week.

I agree with what you've said....there are 3 pending votes that I haven't voted on because I don't think they're unanswerable, and also because I don't know if the answer people want to vote on is right or not.

Recently there have been requests within 24 hours of original post to accept answer...and yes I did vote to accept on 2...but only because I thought you're answer was correct. The others I left because I thought there was more work that could be done. maybe in retrospect I shouldn't have voted so quickly!

What about Yahoo answer's way of dealing with their answers where if the answer is not been accepted after no update from the asker or we can vote for the best answer.

But instead of making this a guideline, can we implement it in the website as a.. feature?

But the downside of using yahoo answer's method is that once the answer is closed, its closed. Maybe we can keep it open for discussion? Or can the "correct answer" change?

Just spitballing ideas around...

some of the answers up for vote at the moment are not in my mind the right answer/ the original question hasn't been answered. Some are replies after another correct/similar answer. if the most upvoted gets accepted it might still not be right but was the most helpful etc.

accepting should be b y poster for 1 week/1 month, then up to us in moderation after that?

by

If an answer is voted for it will become the accepted answer, no matter if there is a current accepted answer. As for the feature versus guideline thing, guidelines are nicer, because they are less work and more flexable, but in reality, they tend to lead to problems when newer users start using the system. I suggest whatever we do we implement it as a feature, not just mandate a guideline.

Really no problem?

You´re right, that a quick accept might not solve a question.

But see that from the other side and go to the unresolved questions and search for CrisB. You will find 60 answers. The oldest is from january 2010, so its not a matter of days, weeks or month we are talking about a year. Now to the reputation, 60 answers multiplicated with 30 points equals 1.800 reputation points. Not to mention the possible points for an upvote. Flaming tag on : Everybody who writes an repair manual, teardown a.s.o. gets his reputation instantly, i´m still missing around 1.800 reputation points! : Flaming Tag off

I agree with you crisb, we all work hard to answer questions and the recognition means a lot. the drawback is that i had an answer accepted the day after i posted- by members on here, and today the man who asked the question has unaccepted it! I think he was right to unaccept-the original question had not been answered.

I too have a back log of answers that have no feedback/not accepted, I think it is these that we should be working on, not voting on yesterday's answers we have posted.

I agree, about a year ago i thought "I don´t care about the number of points i get, as long as it helps people to fix it." But nowadays i see that from a slightly different angle. Why shlould i spend my precious time and continue to write answers, as it seems that no one reads them, resulting in no upvote and it seems that the aswers don´t help to fix the problem, as the answers are not accepted? So give me a reason to continue writing answers!

Getting people to interact & follow up is very difficult. We send a reminder email and try to highlight what they should do throughout the site but are still plagued with no responses. I'm sure your helping tons of people even if the feedback is kinda sparse. We are always open to suggestions on how to improve things. The line between reminding and annoying can be kinda thin.
