Apple has lost my business on the Mac Laptop line

Personally I think the new Mac Laptops completely suck.

  • Butterfly keyboards that are uncomfortable to type on
  • No more MagSafe so if I were to have one of these laptops I couldn’t trust myself to charge my computer at school because I have clumsy classmates
  • Touch Bar. Really? Make a laptop that has a full touch screen for once instead of overcharging for something I would never use regularly
  • T2 chips that are possibly time bombed to not function after certain repairs/replacements are done
  • Improper cooling which shortens the laptop life at least a year
  • Repairability never gets above a 2 or 3

However, there are some positives…

  • Fingerprint sensor for fast and easy unlocking
  • Very responsive trackpad that I can even do some gaming on
  • Space grey and gold finishes are very nice to have on the Mac Laptop line

This video by Zenworm is 95% accurate on how I feel about these new MBPs.

I concur, we won't be buying these for any of our staff.

@kyle Unless these machines are for teardowns!? I still use a MacBook Pro 15" from Late 2011 to this day and it works like a dream! No issues shared with the 2016-current MBPs and it has my favorite aesthetic too, the glowing Apple logo.

I left when they moved to soldered RAM on the 2012 rMBP. That said it’s nitpicky but I expect standard SSD’s and modular RAM in a professional system like the rMBP, even if you have to make it a few mm thicker to do it - nobody will notice and people would be happy with the machine. Put that garbage on the MB instead of importing it to the professional line.

@nick I completely agree with you. Other than the fact that MBs were not being made at the time of this nonsense.

They initially killed it off in 2010 (which was the last year they were upgradable) and brought it back in 2016 with the failure-prone butterfly keyboard and tablet-style motherboard you cannot do anything with.

I'm not asking for socketed CPU's and MXM graphics - I just want standard SSDs that don't rely on a proprietary standard AND 2 RAM slots so you can install 16-32GB of RAM yourself with a giant battery and proper cooling. Sadly the death bell has been rung on that wish. Even if Apple didn't want to sell the OEM drive but they used NVMe I'd be okay with that compromise because I can use an industry standard drive.
