Ifixit Documentation Interface Feedback

Hi Ifixit folks. I wanted to provide some feedback to the documentation interface used on ifixit.com. So far it's been pretty great. Posts come out like they should and they look pretty snazzy. Yeah, sometimes I hit that 8 bullet point limit, but that's not a deal breaker.

My main criticism is about the media uploader. While it easily takes all the images I throw at it, it leaves me with situations where I have to manually take an image back to photoshop because of image aspect ratio. The embedded cropping tool is pretty good, but it leaves the documenter hanging when he/she has an image that is very wide and the image can't be cropped due to valuable information in the photo.

I was wondering if you could add a feature where, when a wide photo is uploaded, it would add white space above and below the image so the documenter doesn't have to manually go back and re-edit the photo. This would have saved me a bunch of time when updating my GH3 end cap post. A lot of the images uploaded were wide aspect and I needed to retain all of the image detail. This also applied to all of my full-screen screenshots. Also, if you could add a similar feature to images smaller than 800x600, that would be fantastic. I totally understand why you don't want tiny images, but sometimes a captured program window is small and has all the information you need.

Thanks for any input you have. Also, my GH3 end cap post now features FEA simulation, and is 40+ posts long :D

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Great detailed guide! You're right, the image editor isn't great for software screenshots. We'll keep that feedback in mind. We're working on other parts of the site right now but I understand where you're coming from. One approach is to uprez the images before you upload them, so then you can crop with impunity.

the images look fine. if you are concerned at the 40+ steps, perhaps more facts less commentary? people are inclined to follow the KISS principle and you may lose valuable facts amongst the words. Just an idea, otherwise well done-fabulous idea to make your own replacement part and make a guide for others

Thanks @kyle ! That means a lot! Next time I'll see if I can batch convert my images to a square aspect ratio and then upload and resize from the built-in image editor. If you could keep it mind as a potential future addition that would be awesome. @pollytintop I'll try to be more concise going forward. Thanks!
