Translating guides in an external translation tool

Hi. Are translations of guides only allowed on the ifixit.com platform? We would like to translate the guides outside ifixit.com in a translation tool and import the translated guides in a semi-automated process i.e. avoiding a copy and paste process. We can see this can be done via the API but is there a simpler export/import process that supports this approach without having to go through an API integration? Thanks.

Well the only other way I know of is to manually download the respective guides via PDF, which may help with import, but not with the fact that one would have to copy paste the outcome back onto the platform - at least I would know a way. But I've been after this for some time and would love to hear more about the translation tool you're thinking about using. If we find a way to make this work together, that would be a major improvement for all of us!

Hi Sandra. I work for a translation company called LanguageWire. We have a customer that will be creating English guides and wishes to translate these into several languages. We would prefer to do the translation in the LanguageWire Platform as the customer can then benefit from the terminology we have in place and we can leverage previous translation work. I know you use CrowdIn currently and although fundamentally different our Platform would have many similar features e.g. translation memory and terminology management. So currently the customer plans to send us Word files for translation in our Platform and we will return translated Word files. The customer will, as you said, have to copy and paste all the translations manually into your platform which is not ideal. We would much prefer an option to export the source English guide, in say XML, and then have the ability to re-import the translated XML files back into your platform without any copy and paste. Thanks.

Great question! We're interested in working with you to come up with a workflow.

We use Crowdin for our UI translation. For guide translation, we have a built-in interface which lacks all the fancy features you have like translation memory and terminology management. We do have a translation glossary in many languages that we can share with you if you're interested.

I can imagine two workflows here.

First: We have an XML API and an XML-backed standard data format called oManual. You can find all the XML specification documents on oManual.org. You can convert to / from oManual from any XML format that many translation tools use. The closest to this format is DITA, and here is the code to convert between DITA and oManual.

If for some reason that doesn't work: We do have a tool available to our moderators for pasting in a complete guide all at once. This doesn't work for translating guides yet, but we could probably make that happen.

Thanks for your detailed feedback. As we need to keep this process simple the conversion to/from DITA is probably a step too far. We are simply trying to reduce the workload on our customers so something simple like been able to paste an entire guide in 1 step would be a significant improvement. I understand it has not been implemented yet but are there plans to do so in the future?

@shanemcguinness While we don't have any concrete plans yet, we'll definitely keep exploring this option. In the meantime, I've created a guide showing how to import guides into CAT tools - even though there's still effort of copy-pasting the outcome back onto our platform, our tests showed a time-saving of 30% compared to direct translation in our interface: https://about.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+im...

@sandrahiller - I cannot see any guide relating to importing content into a CAT tool at the parent category. The only guides I can see are:

- How to Manually Translate Guides

- How to Manually Translate Wikis

- How to View iFixit in Multiple Languages

- Importing the iFixit Technical Glossary into "Own Dictionary with Gifs"

- Importing the iFixit Technical Glossary into "WordTheme" (Android)
