New Answers Design Coming Soon

Hi Folks,

Next week we will roll out a new design for Answers! We'd love to get your feedback as we plan on continually polishing it in the weeks to come.

We had a few key objectives in the redesign:

  1. Make it mobile-friendly so you can easily ask/answer questions across your different devices
  2. Reduce the number of questions posted as answers
  3. Improve the number of votes and accepted answers

Here's a sneak peek of what you can expect:

Looks good!

You may want to pull the system icon on the left. While it's nice to have, you also need to think about the network links some folks have is limited. So the less that needs to travel over the network the better. If you can create a cached icon list sitting on the clients system some how then that should lighten the data flow.

That's an important point. We spend a lot of time optimizing to make the mobile + slow network experience fast. That's why we made the new site responsive, so mobile devices only load what they need. If you load the new Answers on a phone it won't load these icons. Even on desktop, they're small images, only about 2KB each. Keep the feedback coming: we consider performance a feature, and we want to keep Answers fast!

Image caches work pretty well on the web these days. Let the browser do its work, they've gotten pretty good at minimizing bandwidth wherever they can.

I like it. Only concern I have at this time is the moderation part. Any chance to add "Switch to comment"? Like this question https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/2243... where the OP posted his comment as an answer. Who can accept answers? Looks like right now it is set up so that only the original poster can do so, which will be fine.

You're right, we need to add 'switch to a comment' back in. Give us a day or so — it was a big sprint over the weekend to get this done and we're a bit winded. We're interested in feedback! I want to redesign the /Moderation page soon as well. Meta will also be getting the new treatment in the next couple days.

Also need the "post as update to a question". A good repairman goes after one problem at a time and makes changes one at a time. Work your bugs out first before changing another site. Just my humble opinion.

Yes, I completely agree that 'Convert to an update' is needed. It's a bug that it's missing and we'll get it back!

The comment box ix back but then I try to change an answer to a comment it asks for a link to another question.

That device seems to be linked correctly, can you give me a bit more detail? What specific edit are you making?

I can't vote to accept it or completely accept it. Next problem, I can no longer search in answers nor is there a way to search just my answers. The box is there but nothing happens. The upper search works. I need to be able to search just my answers, a search for T7200 gives me 246 results and the time it would take to find the old answer I am looking for would be prohibitive.
