New avatars for individuals, teams, and Meta contributors

Hi folks,

We just rolled out new avatars for members, teams, and Meta contributors who have not uploaded a picture. There are different image sets for each group, so you can more easily distinguish the type of contributor you're interacting with. Here's a list of the images we are using:

Kaykay they look great!

Do you think adding a colored halo ring around the IFIXIT folks avatar might be helpful?

Thanks Dan! I think that's a good idea. It would be nice to show some sort of distinction for iFixit employees.

Got one more for you :-} I'm starting to encounter a few doppelgängers (other folks with the same name). I think we need to start looking at adding a digit or something that makes each users name unique. While the avatars are great on the Q's & A's the comments don't have them so its hard to track sometimes who's who.

KayKay any ideas on moving to unique user names?

by

Hi Dan! Let me review that with the team. Thanks again for all the feedback :)

Moving to unique user names would be a good idea. Unfortunately, it's quite a bit of work. It's something that I want to do, but it may take some time to make it happen.

In the meantime, let us know if someone is behaving improperly and we'll reach out to them.

KayKay, they look good but what do the different colors signify?

The colors are completely random!

Shouldn't they have some connotation? Maybe students, other than English speaker, novice at repair, some repair experience,?

by

That would be interesting, but we assign the avatar when folks sign up for an account. And we know almost nothing about them at that point — just their email address. We could certainly do it later, but I'm a little reticent to change people's avatars on them as they earn reputation.
