760369 - stumbled across this one but I think that they’ve got to go

It’s beginning to look like, a few every day keeps the spammers at bay or at least quieter ;-)

Could you also check this user. They’ve made a lot of edits to guides, wiki etc in one day.

I picked it up when looking at patrol here and the link they inserted wasn’t relevant to the wiki but was more like spam but the user is US based and the link was for a firm in Aust. Student practicing perhaps?

Hi @sarahw

Any feedback on the 3rd?

Cheers

by

Hi @jayeff, I'm so sorry. I was so focused on the first two, I totally missed the third. The third is a student and he's working on a project so he's okay. Thank you for making us aware though! Again, sorry for missing that!

by

Hi @sarahw ,

No problems

Thanks for the feedback - I'm now also more aware ;-)

Hi @sarahw ,

Can you explain why someone would go to all the trouble of completely changing a wiki or is it just a subtle version of spam?

This one is awaiting verification in Patrol.

The user who did this doesn’t have any “student” affiliation that I can see not like the one I posted the other day.

I’ve noticed in the past in the Patrol area where others may have changed the title of a wiki for some unknown reason (to me anyway) so that it differed from the summary and therefore was not really relevant e.g. wiki title was for a particular device and was altered but the summary underneath wasn’t altered or vise versa, usually same brand different model. These I took upon myself to deny so that it wouldn’t confuse anyone who accessed it as to what device or subject it actually referred to.

here is a new example of this. Notice that the model number in the summary under the title in the unverified version now differs from the model number in the title. I’m at a loss as to know why this would be done without also saying something in the summary about the “new” model. In this instance there is only an in progress guide attached so not too much harm is done but on others there have been full guides attached which may possibly mislead if the title was changed for a different model and readers thought that it was the same as what was shown

Maybe I’m getting out of touch

Cheers and ‘avagoodweegend ;-)

Hi @jayeff, thank you for catching these! For the first example. When I looked at the wiki and then asked my colleague about it, we decided that the whole thing looked pretty spammy and decided to delete and ban the original author. As for the person who was re-writing it, that looked spammy too. I am going to ban him as well.

For the second example, when I clicked on the link, it looks like someone took care of it, because it just took me to the Patrol page in general so I wasn't able to look at it. If people are messing with pages in general, we will just have to be careful to catch them and hopefully they are caught in Patrol. I guess it will be on us to verify if the information is true especially if it looks a little suspicious.

Thanks again and I hope you have a good weekend too!

Hello, it was some time since last time but now I’m here again! @sarahw

I was doing some patrolling and found that this user has edited at least one guide and just added a picture of either a random person or himself.

https://www.ifixit.com/User/3697486/Dori...

I denied them and if you can’t see them because of me deleting them, I can send you a screenshot I saved in case. I just don’t want to share the picture here.

Hello @sarahw ,

I think this guide is a spam :

https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/Amazon+Al...

And the associated user too is a spammer :

https://fr.ifixit.com/User/3075340/amazo...

Because he promote a product instead of providing a repair or a helper guide.

I just saw that this user is sending links and text in another language, it seems to be some kind of add for a website for streaming movies (I run it through Google Translate).

Hi @sarahw ,

Step.28 introduction in this guide needs to be edited or the patrol guide entry for the iPhone 7 battery replacement guide by this user needs to be denied.

The same with the guide entry modified by this user. I don’t know why they would change an entry for an iPhone 6 guide to connect it with an iPhone 6 Plus guide as there is a guide for it as well. Are they just trying to annoy or what? I think that it would create confusion if when on the Iphone 6 page that you went back to the iphone 6 plus page that was linked to it.

I don’t have enough “reputation” to do either ;-)

Is this user spamming or should it be deleted as not repair related?

Cheers

Hi @jayeff, thank you for making us aware of those edits, I denied them. As for the third user, it seems like they might be a spammer. They are posting like they are questions but they seem more like ads. Because there has only been one link, maybe we should just keep an eye on them and if they post one more we'll ban them. Thanks again! :)
