Hi @amber

Just wondering how much Ifixit server storage space was being used (wasted?) by retaining spam answers/comments/questions that have been deleted by the iRobot or even by moderation?

I’ve noticed that when I’ve come across spam content that sometimes when selecting the show deleted option in a thread that there is a lot of deleted spam content still there which in some cases has been there for years.

I realize that it is only visible to the admin and the moderators but after a while surely it must be impacting on the available server storage.

Here are just two examples

example 1, example 2 (select Show Deleted option)

Cheers

Hi @jayeff!

This is a really interesting question that I've never given any thought to... I see the value in keeping them for some time so that people can restore their content if they change their minds–but forever seems like a long time. Let me look into this!

As for that user, I've take care of it!

2016 does seem like a while ago now.

Hi @amber

Surely "....keeping them for some time so that people can restore their content...." wouldn't apply to posts that are purely spam?

I feel that the majority of the deleted posts would fall under this category. Some may try to pass it off as an answer but in the end it is just spam.

Maybe the devs need to come up with a Windows Recycle Bin type concept where once something has been deleted as spam, (this would include spammer's account info etc) as opposed to being simply deleted for whatever legitimate reason by the OP (or admin etc), it is held in the bin for a suitable length of time and then the bin can be purged to remove it all from storage.

I realize that storage is getting cheaper but it all adds up especially if you include the power costs to keep all the servers running.

Cheers

@jayeff I think that's a great way to look at it! I'll send your suggestions to the devs and see what they think.

Hi @amber ,

Mostly links the same website. Also has the same contact i.e. @ cookip as the website URL i.e. cookip.com which makes me think it is spam or self promoting

Good point. For now I've manually marked them as spam and I'll check in on the account next week. I'll either ban them if it's more spam or I'll email them with a warning if it looks like they're trying to be helpful but just self-promoting more.

by

Hi Jayeff, I've been checking this account regularly and they haven't posted any more. I call it a win!

Hi @amber

I found this one : https://fr.ifixit.com/Vue+%C3%89clat%C3%...

This guide is empty and the summary doesn’t contain a valid content for a guide.

And this one put a mail in his username :

Hi @es_six, thank you for bringing this to our attention! We're working on this now and will be in touch with a solution.

by

As far as the email address in the username–it's not technically against the community guidelines, just frowned upon. Mostly because people can send them spam. We'll reach out to them with a warning that they should change it.

Thanks, @es_six!

Hi again,

I found this one too : https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/Unisex+Cr...

And I think this one can be deleted too becasue it’s empty and in the history we can see the author has not the intention to make a guide : https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/diff/intr...

And this one because it’s empty for a long time : https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/Phone+Hom...

@amber I think this guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Best+SMM+Pa... as well as this one https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/SMM+Service... should be taken to the trash. The author of those https://www.ifixit.com/User/4040883/Bulk... should have his services moved somewhere else. Thank you!

Hi @amber ,

Something strange happened to this question.

Initially I moderated it so that all the subsequent “answers” by the OP were changed to updates to the question.

Then there was an answer by another user that I deemed spam so I moderated that answer as spam. (This still shows as -100pts in the users activity page but the question is now visible again and no longer deleted)

In the interim the OP edited their question and entered with what I regarded as a spam link. Then later they accepted their own answer as the Chosen Solution so I moderated the question initially as Not repair related and then as archive not answerable just to see what happens and also so that the OP would not lose rep points

An hour later it is back as you see it now.

The question’s History shows that it was reopened by me but I didn’t do it. In the “my votes” area in Moderation on ifixit shows what I did with the question

Very strange as there is no other users or moderators shown in the History for the question, only the OP and me, yet this occurred.

It’s like all my moderation has been reversed.

Cheers

This is weird. I've archived the post for now so some folks can look at it with me next week to figure out what happened.

My gut feeling on this one is that they posted a "regular" question and intended to edit it with spam to sneak around our filter (though they kind of messed up leaving the original title.) Thanks, @jayeff!

Hi @nick,

See my answer directly above.

@amber had already deleted it again this morning my time when I checked, but somehow the user can restore it again.

Maybe I'll try a ban and see if that works ;-) @amber can always restore the account if I'm wrong ;-)

by

@jayeff @nick A ban was the right choice. I'm still not sure about the edits/moderation showing up wonky. I haven't gotten to it yet, but I plan to! =]

Hi @jayeff, I looked at his answers and they do seem helpful. I agree about not being totally sure on if he's a spammer or not. Would you feel comfortable with the decision for me to email him a warning about external links and I'll monitor his account activity for the next few weeks to decide if he's a legitimate spammer or not?

by

@amber

Sounds good to me.

And this one is suspicious too :

- https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/How+to+fi... (empty + question in history)

by

Hi @es_six, thanks for sending those over! I've gone ahead and deleted all of them. Often blank guides are folks who are confused and have posted (or attempted to post) their question as a guide.

by

Thank you :)

Should I report blank guides / guides having only a question in it content ?

by

@es_six You can. There are many of them. We are working on a way to delete very old blank guides en masse. If you share them here, I'll delete them manually. =]

by

Thank you for reply, if batch detection and deletion of empty guides is planned in the short term, I can avoid reporting empty guides for now :) This will be more usefull after the mass deletion occured.
