general opinion about repairability of MacBook 2007

have been thinking about repairing a laptop/mac for a while and there is a water damaged macbook 2007 (2.0ghz) finishing today with no bids for £0.99..everything is still inside but untested/unopened..

no.1...it's not for the junk competition although it sounds like it might be only good for junk.

no.2..it's only my second go at repairing something like this (the first was only the i/o so doesn't count)

no.3.. I'm wanting to learn but not wreck everything in the process. It'd be good for parts etc for another one?

what I'm asking is whether this is something with loads of pitfalls and traps for the unwary, is it something to try later ie start with something easier. ( I know many people fix their own things having never done it but you guys are here just for little old me to ask these questions so I will) any hints or tips greatly appreciated.

btw how successful are waterdamage repairs on laptops (iyho..)

Update

any opinion about g5 imac? (a1058) I've looked at the guides and it seems straightforward enough.

I'd go for it Jen. If you obtain it for that price you can always sell enough parts to get your money back and you could easily end up with a low cost Mac Book.

Good luck. Ralph

have bid...am looking forward to it, nice if I can fix it but I doubt it..think it's one of these "waterdamage" that happened years ago and the corrosion has set in! any hints or tips?

Water damage is almost always not fixable (Without tons of testing equipment, plenty of free time, and really good luck) I actually have two PowerBook G4's sitting in my closet with water damage, and I've pretty much given up on them. I've already sold their working parts (Superdrives, LCD assemblies, Ect) because the chance that they'll ever work again (Without a logic board replacement) is pretty low. So to answer part of your question, repairs on water-damaged laptops (and most other complex electronics) are usually not successful. However, if the other parts of the laptop work, you could sell it's parts individually.

yep that's what I thought..needle in a haystack! luckily have been outbid, but am prowling ebay for something more likely to be repaired. if it had been only 99p then I wouldn't have cared.. some other plonker can have it! thanks for your input though, appreciate the expertise.

I haven't done too much broken computer shopping lately, but I did buy an old 1983 IBM PC at a flea market for $10, so that will be my backup project if things go south for the oscilloscope (Or if it works fine)

Fixing water damage on a MacBook is rather impossible, assuming that the previous owner most likely shorted the logic board by failing to cut power to it. The same thing happened to mine a year ago (R.I.P. Logic Board). Luckily Apple was feeling generous and repaired it for free, but the cost of the new parts would have been upwards of 700 dollars. However, fixing one that is broken in other ways could be a lot more doable, inexpensive, and fun!

that's my new plan..got to start somewhere, but I like something that is more likely to be fully functioning afterwards, I'm not happy when things don't go my way!

I really don't like liquid damaged machines. In my opinion they're money pits. Better to use your knowledge gained here and look for one on eBay that has symptoms that you know how to fix. If there have been no bids on this type of machine I will write them and tell them how to fix it. If it already has bids, then doing that does no good and I might as well get it for myself. I bought three of the 17" 1.83 GHz iMac that had screen recalls on them (Apple fixed them all for me). I've bought three MacBook Pros with the Nvidia issue (Apple fixed them all for me, free). Even if Apple doesn't come through, you know what the problem is and the costs to repair. Some people just don't want to mess with a machine with a bad hard drive or cracked screen or even a bad power adapter. You know where to get answers and parts. But I would never buy one without a pretty certain knowledge that I could fix it.

good advice richard, have decided to buy something that I think I stand a chance of fixing...I'd rather something with a bad i/o board than fried motherboard. Am getting a bit bored with the smallness of iphones...

I like that one, Nick. The shipping is right and if the logic board is good, you've hit a home run. The RAM may pay for it.

That MacBook will undoubtedly be expensive to fix

Nice approach to buying them from eBay.

The A1181 is a very reliable and repairable laptop. Lots of parts out there for them. You can get them for a good price if you pay attention. As previously mentioned the test equipment for doing chip level repair can be costly. Not all repairs require that type of work. I've purchased an A1181 with the same specs you mention functioning properly with a broken LCD for $127 including shipping. Ive purchased perfectly good used LCDs for this MacBook for as low as $50 including shipping.

thanks ab, appreciate your advice. I've got the imac g5 and am going to replace all the bulging caps. Am not up to any fancy/fine soldering at the mo.. dodgy arm! If I can repair this I think I'll sell it on, we actually need a laptop so am now watching an ibook g4 with no backlight but otherwise working/boxed. The waterdamaged macbook sold for £32 in the end. I'll keep an eye out for something a little more repairable than waterdamage ...if someone hands me their iphone the day/week after I can mostly fix it, but ebay waterdamage could have happened last year!
