Answers: necessity to identify the problematic device to get an answer

Kyle,

Would it be possible to force the user who ask a question on Answers to identify adequately the problematic device before asking the question ? No question accepted by the system without adequate device identification.

System could need two valid infos to accept the question:

1- device's name: ex: Apple Macbook pro

2- device model number: ex: A1278 or MacBookPro5,5 or MB990LL/A

That would save a lot of time and users could get an answer faster.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Yes this is beginning to be a real problem. So far today (only half over) I have had to add comments on a number of questions requesting the make and model of the computer or a better explanation of the problem. Ralph +

Good idea. I'm thinking about approaches to this and I'll post a summary of my thoughts tomorrow.

OK I went to ask a question and looked at it. What if the lines were slightly modified this way

1. Item--Make and Model/Version/Specific or All

2. Short description of your problem

3. Detailed description of your problem

I realized there will always be some who won't read or won't comply with the form but perhaps if the form is clearer more will and that will make it easier to help them. Ralph

We already require a device, but sometimes a problem actually does apply to all iBooks, or all Macs, or all computers, or all Cars, or most Bikes, or anything else where a model number wouldn't apply. I recognize that it's a problem, but it's a problem without an easy solution. How else could we solve this problem?
