Where do they go

Have you ever noticed how many times a question is asked and no one stays around long enough for an answer. Ive answered questions moments after the question was asked and no one is there to respond. They took the time to register to ask the question you'd think they could wait around long enough for an answer.

Answered! View the answer I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@jimfixer take a look on here Why do people help each other in these forums? for a bit more reading :-) As you can see, we all share this philosophy

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for the feedback and your contribution to iFixit.

Unfortunately, this particular problem seems to be plaguing many online forums. We've made a number of improvements to our site to try and get folks to participate on their asked question threads:

  • We notify folks via email when a response has been posted prompting them to return
  • We recently launched a new on-site notification system alerting members about any question activity
  • And for folks that might not want to provide a text response, we've made selecting the proper answer as easy as clicking a button

It's likely that people might be getting the correct answer and don't feel it's necessary to provide a response. Maybe they tried the fix and forgot to come back and close out their question? Alternatively, they might not try the repair at all and not want to "accept" an answer they didn't try.

This is definitely something we're interested in improving and we're open to any ideas you might have on helping us to solve it. Let's keep the conversation going!

Thanks again!

I thank you for your informative response and up you one suggestion. I notice a lot of times a question will get buried in an old question . Im assuming they are lost in the question form were they are give the similar question that was asked long ago and this brings that question back up in the form but unless you go digging in the form you wont realize there's a new question hidden in the comments. Is there a way you could actually not let them comment but make them ask a new question but somehow have it linked to the old form. Then maybe new questions wont get lost in old forms.

@Jimfixer, this has plagued "Answers" for a long time. Check through some of the very old question on here. Something like this Why does no one answer anymore on ifixit? or this one A bit of thought(and advice) for the ignorance in Answers, etc... give you a bit more history on the issue. Keep on trucking and just answer away. You may even get a T-shirt :-))

I see from the forms you posted this has been discussed to death . Just does get frustrating , I'm the kind of person who likes to know it got done and some of the more interesting cases it would be nice to know how things ended up I'm nosey I guess . A while back I was following mayer and Dan helping a guy with a Imac and it seemed like they were just spinning there wheels then the guy decided to try the first thing mayer had mentioned and turned out it fixed his problem . was kinda anti climactic but also amusing to and showed how tenacious the help here can be. Ive had need of some advice here myself and appreciate all the help I receive. keep up the great work

I want to know if it got done, too! Feedback from question posters is hugely important. We have to continue to work toward encouraging that. The new 'I have this problem too' button has really helped cut back on duplicate questions, which is great. Let's keep brainstorming ideas for tightening the feedback loop.

I have updated my post on it to read easier, and some commentary on how it's handled in 2016.

@nick what post? Link please.

I feel a lot of this is because people don't really know that we are volunteers and not paid. I think people might be a bit more grateful if they would be more aware of that fact. Right now you're lucky to even get an up-vote. Even the guys who answer question don't vote much. I would venture a guess that between OldTurkey and myself we do more than half of all voting. Even the iFixit staff seldom gives votes. @kyle This means YOU TOO!

Total votes by OT & myself = 44,065 Total votes by Kyle 1105

I got an email from iFixit tonight. The first of its kind. It said I reached 689.1 k people with my answers last month. My guides had 29.2 k views. Was awarded 70 badges. That is very encouraging. I bet Marco Rubio wishes he were doing as well. Thank you for that info iFixit team.

@mayer thanks for the ongoing feedback. We have a few things in the works to improve volunteer awareness, but if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them.

I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying our new emails :) We can't thank you enough for all of your contribution and I'm sure the 700k people you reached last month appreciate it, too!

@mayer you and I know that if we, volunteers like @jimfixer jayeff @danj and many others, don't look out for each other, nobody will. We need to continue to appreciate each others work and continue to learn from each other. Upvotes are my way of saying thank you for all your hard work and your time. Another interesting fact is that the top 3 users provide 34% of all answers for a grand total of 25,314 answers :-) Yes, I do thank ifixit (@kyle) and the great people of that team for providing us with the means to help others out.

@oldturkey03 I wonder what percentage of the Mac Questions (how iFixit stays in business) that we three answer. Sorry, I'm a little miffed about Apples ongoing policy of not taking care of their customers right now and this: Tim Cook's Total Pay For 2014 Was Over $100 Million http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how...
