What ever happened to the idea of PM

Last May we had a discussion about a wall or PM to allow members to communicate with each other. As I recall I voted against the wall but in favor of PM as I find that works well in other forums. I think as time has gone by the idea is showing more and more merit leading to my question. The link to the previous discussion is as follows

I think that pm would help the sense of community that seems vital to this site. The regular users/answerers of questions have no real way of keeping in touch or motivating each other apart from putting comments in the public arena

I've listed my email address on my about me page, but this has led to around three to five people emailing me every week with questions, requests for free parts and free repairs that should be posted in Answers. I'm now the proud owner of a 1995 PowerBook 5300ce that a guy sent me to pay for the parts I sent him, (of course it doesn't work). At least he made a shot at payment ;-), most don't.

I'm not really wanting to chat with mr x about his iPhone... Not being snobbish , but that's what questions is for. I don't want to hound you guys with inane chit chat, but it'd be nice to be a bit more friendly than tacking comments onto answers. Something like a wall for regular users ( not...one question John brown who never comes back and marks his answer) to vent, laugh, make fun of pants spelling mistakes, whatever... But stop just being rab,rj,Mayer, turkey, polly etc and be a better community because it would seem that we're all enjoying keeping this place running!

I am in total agreement with any of the prior comments. If nothing else it enables support of each other and creates a sense of community. This would be a great way to accomplish the ifixit mission.

I'd like a way to compliment people for doing a really good job. Maybe allowing anyone to award someone a badge with a note attached.…

We've talked of putting up comments or something like that on profiles and allowing people to leave public/private messages. I'll bring this up next chance we're talking features & see what people think.

UPDATE: Sorry but the integrated iFixit PM feature is too much work for too little benefit. We recommend a dedicated email address (ifixit_pm_...@gmail.com). Post it on your profile and people will have an easy way to communicate with you. It also seems like people want a chat option. We're looking into creating an iFixit IRC channel which will let users chat about stuff. When we figure that stuff out we'll post again.

hi.... just to bring to this to the forefront again... there doesn't seem to be a whole lot going on. Please would you bring it up again again?? we need a way to contact each other without having it out there in the public space. thank you very very much. xx

by

Cool. Thanks for taking the time to listen to us, it's appreciated.x

by

Any idea when finding the time to accomplish this may become available? Thank you

by

It's a lot of work with fairly little gain so it's not on any foreseeable milestone. Why don't you get a dedicated email and post that on your profile? It'd be about the same as a PM with way more functionality.

Here we go making me feel cheap again :-) "things that make us more revenue" does that mean more volunteer hours :-) It's all good and I appreciate it. Thanks.

Oh, poor owl. You're not cheap, we've had this discussion- you're free!

by

;-) I like free, thanks for making me feel better.

Sorry, I should have really said "cool big features" instead of mentioning revenue; I had other things on my mind. You are priceless and we don't work without you. We see and appreciate your efforts but the things you ask are much more complex than you think & we must move slow to ensure quality.

by

Theres a lot to be said for moving slowly. Reforms must be thought about and chewed on. Just ask Hosni Mubarak or Zine El Abidine Ben Ali or Muammar Gaddafi or our own American Democratic Majority Congress just how people feel about slow moving reforms if you can find where they're hiding. Don't tell me you're going to do something and six months down the road you can't do it because you're to busy making money. I'm I hostile? you bet.

@Mayer: Just out of curiosity, have you ever written code before? Or been involved in a large collaborative custom code-base? How about making code to be secure against hacking? Done browser QA (testing all site functionality in IE6/7/8/9, multiple FireFox version, Safari, Chrome, Opera, Mobile OS's)? This stuff is a lot more complex than you think. We have to make it hacker proof. We have to make it pretty. We have to make it intuitive (think Apple's "simple" interface is easy to design? HA!). 10+ years of coding experience has taught: patience is a virtue. Hurried products = ugly buggy products. We don't do that.

right then... all those in favour of PM it looks like the way forward is for all of us to join the same thing like msn or whatever, post it on our profiles and log in when we're on ifixit. i don't see a whole lot of anything going to be happening here and the blokes at the top aren't really interested in spending money on something so small.

I have yahoo, Gmail and Microsoft live(Hotmail). If I get in on this I am ready for what ever you all decide. I believe it would be better than communicating through comments. I have spent some time cleaning my communication out of threads. People don't need to see that. It has nothing to do with repair and it looks tacky.

yup i agree ab

Let me try setting up an IRC channel for us. That would be a good way to let everyone communicate together, and there are a lot of great IRC chat programs. I've submitted a request for a new group on my favorite IRC host, and I'll let you know when they approve it.

by

We could just make a convore, requires way less set up. Here, I created one. https://convore.com/ifixit/

by

Convore looks good to me! Try it out, and if you like it I can add a permanent link to it in the meta header.
