Can we have more choices for moderation?

on the hot topic of moderation and trying to clean things up here is a question that shouldn't be where it is but doesn't need to be deleted for any of the reasons offered by mod. http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/12928...

there are times when answers could be switched to questions and vice versa. not always on the options. Instead of voting to delete the poor misguided questions, how about switch to new question as an option? These people have come to ifixit for help and perhaps deleting their questions is not good PR for the site? I think I'd be a bit annoyed if that happened to me!

just an idea.

Jen

PS thanks to all of you for your comments and wisdom...seems we're all singing from the same songsheet!

Update

Just another idea to stop the "me too" people. When an answer is accepted then it is closed to people with no rep/further answers are allowed only by moderators which requires a rep of 100 anyway??

Update

guys..just to say thanks heaps for the "switch to question" option..brilliant!!!

Answered! View the answer I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I agree with you and even trying to tell people to ask their own question is sometimes fruitless. It would make it so much easier...

Basically what is needed here is a method to move an answer to Meta as a question. What about it programmers? Good question Jen. +

I actually think that question belongs on Answers, not meta. It's repair related—he wants to hack his iPod to make it work longer. That's a legitimate repair question.

But that's beside the point of your request, which is that you want a feature to switch an answer to a question. We've considered it in the past, but wanted to keep the moderation options as simple as possible. How often would you use a feature like this? Can you provide me with a few other examples?

Most days I see 4+ new questions put where an answer should be. They are politely told that they are responding to another persons question. Followed by requesting them to ask their own question so their problem can get the attention it needs. To keep the topic/thread clean it is marked as not an answer.

I think my response to this question was poorly stated. What is needed is some method of converting a answer to a question without attempting to convince the poster to do so. AB has hit the nail on the head-- we have to decide to leave it where it is or delete what may be an interesting question. Unfortunately I can see no easy way to do this. I think this one is above my paygrade.

I would venture a guess that only one in ten of the "me too" responders actually starts their own question and we do ask politely most of the time. Give us the option to change them to questions instead of voting them off.

by

All right, I definitely hear what you're saying. Final question: If they're not willing to take the time to learn the system and put their question in the right place, why shouldn't we just delete it and let them go somewhere else? This site only works if we have people willing to become experts at sharing information. Those sort of people seem like they're just going to be a drain. Maybe we should let you add a more clear note to them when you delete the question. How can we use this as a teaching opportunity, rather than just categorizing the question for them?

by

This is about customer service and satisfaction as well as PR. If I visit a site and my question is deleted I'm going to tell a whole bunch of people when they ask me what I did to fix my broken ----- that ifixit sucks and to go to the local handyman! 1 unhappy customer is no good. I think what sets ifixit apart is that we are polite, we revisit questions and we aim for the solution no matter how silly the asker. The person we fob off may have been someone needing your product=lost income! A lot of people are non English as a first language +/- youthful.... We need to cut them some slack! A happy customer is excellent for business and that's the bottom line!

Perhaps we could implement a "Me Too" option below an original Answer posting. That way other people viewing the post can choose to follow the discussion on their exact same repair issue without the complication of saying "Me Too" or having to be encouraged to make a duplicate question.

Example:

Poster: I have ______ help?

[Me Too] <- Click to follow responses to this same repair issue

Accepted Answer: ____

I am not entirely sure how difficult that is from a coding perspective, but it would not require a change in moderator options this way.
