Why is your shipping costs so high?

$16 for a kit containing no more than a few pounds of bits, thermal pads and paste?! I've operated a shipping facility and know the costs of shipping so I am curious why yours is so high? I was so ready to buy the standard PS3 YLOD repair kit without the heat gun for $24.95 until checkout.

Sorry, but wanted to provide feedback that you could use.

Happy New Year!

Charging $16 to ship an iPhone battery and adhesive strip to NYC is a borderline fraud. You can stick it in an envelope and send it 1st class mail for less than a few $s or a small flat rate priority box for $7

by

@pookie4g you can buy it off amazon for free shipping. but really as @annettefuller said, iFixit does not too much power over shipping price. also, Don't you think the battery would get damaged in a letter?

by

@pookie4g the cost of shipping batteries is high and slow due to the incident with the Note 7's. It has been a problem for iFixit since.

by

ah how I hate the Note 7

Hi Darryl,

Thanks for the feedback! We appreciate hearing from you.

I'm not personally involved with our negotiations with our shipping carriers, or the calculations for handling fees, but I can assure you that we do our best to pass on the best deals possible to our customers. We're not like the big companies like Amazon, who can subsidize shipping costs with their other profits. We've grown so much since the company was started, but not quite enough yet to qualify for that kind of status. :)

There could also be pricing tiers with the shipping companies we use, based on how many packages we ship out a day. It seems to me like we ship out a lot, but probably only a small fraction of what larger companies send out.

Rest assured, we are constantly re-evaluating the process and costs, trying to make everything as efficient and cost effective as possible.

Thanks again for your feedback!

@nick Free shipping sounds great, but in fact there is no such thing. Shipping costs. Usually the further away, the higher the cost. Shipping to other countries becomes even more difficult. Time in shipping costs. Free shipping is just not practical unless you are someone like Amazon that would get tremendous volume discounts.

by

Why since you already sell a portion of your parts through Amazon wouldn't you allow the rest of your inventory to be on there? Not only will you get more sales but a happier customer base since your shipping is actually stupid. The expense doesn't make any sense. I would rather spend 700+ on Amazon and have it "free in 2 days" (14/month) over 60 in shipping from you. In my case adding an extra 9% cost. It sucks especially since I have used a friend pro toolkit and I like the quality and organization of your tools. But I refuse to spend more than I need. I'm working on putting my life together and doing computer repairs and moving into networking but I guess I'm piecing a kit on Amazon. Please let me know when you decide to be more reasonable with shipping. Shoutout to Linus Media.

Maybe a few hints oR a guide on how to ship would be in order ;-0

I get a few requests every year from people around the for me to fix their machines but loss most because of the high shipping costs. For instance I fixed a MacBook Pro 15" for a guy in Shanghai and the slow FedEx rate was $55 each way. That plus packing costs really kills my business. South America slaps on huge tariffs. Canada adds import costs to the tune of 40%. Yet I can buy Mac parts out of China with free shipping (of course their Government is probably subsidizing this.

It can be really hard to make a living with these shipping costs.

I was looking at retiring to Ecuador and doing repairs by mail but the tariffs in then out on the machine make that impossible. Plus the costs on the parts are hit.

It would be nice to hear insider tips on how to ship.

I am no means a rich guy, But shipping prices are reasonable and &&^&^$^ affroadable, Maybe, MAYBE our government pays a lot of need so that Will have a effect.

Or the tools of prices here are so HIGH.

and You guys are in America. Uk.

I am in Srilanka.

Amazon’s “Assumed TAX” + “ GLOBAL SHIPPING” costs, right down it,

8x of a repair kits mony value or what goes to the seller.

So for many guys who gets heart attacked by the AMAZON’S ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE POWERED shipping costs (that anyhow inreases after in Sri lanka, what is with those neural nets?) and live in South-Asia iFixit totally wins it.

If you used a package forwarder, the shipping costs are great.

“…I'm not personally involved with our negotiations with our shipping carriers, or the calculations for handling fees, but I can assure you that we do our best…” (from the “Chosen Solution,” above)

Ms. Fuller, this smells like obscurantist puffery, a sop to the rabble. If you don’t know how the costs are arrived at, I’m not sure why you are addressing these complaints at all or whether your claim that the high costs are due to the carriers (and not, say, to your management adding bit of plump to their margins) should carry any weight.

We’ve all been buying various items in various quantities from various vendors using various carriers for, well, decades. Your shipping costs do seem excessive.

What is your point? Charge for a job? If you need free shipping, you can buy in China, what is the problem? It could be more constructive

@lmdorsey you are complaining about an answer that is almost 2 years old. I noticed that you are a new member to this community and have not yet made any other contribution than the bellyaching about somebody else's answer.

@oscarsp thanks!

@oldturkey03 (And _you_ lost no time in complaining about a comment to an answer that is almost 2 years old... etc.) Howdy, neighbor, lovely community you got here!

@Oscar My point is simply that the ifixit response self-serving piffle voiced by a flak. The costs _are_ high. And no very good reason why has been given. It's not complicated.

by

The shipping cost is still ridiculous 2 years later. It's 60 dollar shipping for spend 700+ on a repair business tool kit and accessories what is this? Every vendor has free shipping when you spend more than 150. I'm not buying from iFixit especially since they apparently are the leading brand for the right to repair. How are you going to be customer forward and make them pay and extra pro toolkit for buying an enormous chunk of repair tools?
