Hi @nick, thanks for letting us know. I've removed the answer because it caused some confusion.

by

@sarahw It even caused some confusion and frustration with the comments on my answer where I explained why in my answer, even though I did eventually explain where I'm coming from in the comments myself. If I can't find a silent way to do it and the ways to do it are blocked by anyone who knows what to provision it to, it can't be done. I didn't initially provide that background information to keep people from asking how to do what I did because it's not easy to cut the deal I did, but the continued attempts and mentions of a bypass forced it sadly. I don't like having to provide what I provided, but I think in this case the exception is truly warranted.

I took the comment to the answer first to help. At least my take on it has the most weight so it isn't as much of a confusing question. At least before COVID, this wasn't as common and few tried to work around the unworkable.

May be an innocent person who doesn’t think they come off as a self promoting spammer, but I’m not so sure since they posted a link to their own teardown and it mentions REWA in the intro of the referenced teardown.

Hello again @sarahw

I just found this user spamming random letters and some kind of add:

It seems like iRobot took care of most of it, but I write it here anyway.

Please comment if I shouldn’t write things that iRobot have mostly taken care of here.

Hi @eke0909 ,

Personally I think that you should let them know about persistent spammers even if the iRobot has deleted some of the user's spam posts.

They can be banned and then that means less spam will be posted.

I do it when I notice that a user has already had at least 2 posts deleted that were spam and I come across a 3rd that hadn't been picked up. maybe a bit harsh but they haven't come back here to complain ;-)

Hi @sarahw ,

Bit off topic.

I’m not into checking guides etc, but was wondering why this user would have inserted all the text under the title in this guide (unverified version, which has yet to be approved)?

For future reference, can I delete entries like this, as I’m sure it doesn’t belong there?

They have also submitted a comment in an Answer along similar lines which is fair enough, just can’t understand why the edit to the guide was made.

Most Helpful Answer

Hi @sarahw ,

Maybe I’m seeing it wrong, but I have already advised this user that it is not the idea of ifixit Answers to direct to professional repair services as an answer.

Sometimes his answers/comments ares OK but with a lot it isn’t and he’s been busy, with answers and comments and modifying guides etc

I deleted about 6 such answers last night and now this morning the user is back again doing the same thing.

He simply re posted the same answer - example only each time as before, to some of the questions. (click on Show deleted to see) There is also a modification to a device page that seems like a review more than anything, and also and ad? perhaps, amongst some device modifications he did.

Also he has “moderated” some questions as “Archive as unanswerable” which to me seems that because he can’t answer it, no one can. This one I have answered, just to show that it can be answered and simply hadn’t been until now, so there may be others who can answer the other questions and therefore maybe will help someone down the track

Can these be removed from the Moderation page without removing the question? The other voter for the questions’ removal is a person who seems to vote for moderation on everything, just for the sake of it although I might be wrong about that ;-)

Since I cannot ban the user temporarily and reading his profile this has already occurred once before, perhaps a reminder from you would have more impact or just an outright ban.

Thanks for letting me know about this but i really think you should have told me in one of my answers about the moderation the reposted answers and the device page that had a ad in it also the one were you left a comment under my answer will also be deleted Sorry about this happening!

by

@jayeff Follow up the reposted answers have been deleted the moderations will be deleted by somebody else who pushes the x button pushed the x button as well the device page gone the one comment that you advised me not to direct people to repair services gone

by

Hi @sarahw ,

Seems as though @pencetenmosioc has recognised the problem and has fixed it. Although the Moderation page still needs to be sorted. You may want to check with @kristen as she got a reply as well

@pencetenmosioc just for your info, I removed those 6 posts last night (my time zone) after the reminder that I sent you and as there was no acknowledgement by you and since you were still posting on ifixit for some time after the reminder, I thought OK you're ignoring it. That is why I removed those posts as you hadn't.

Then when I noticed earlier today (my time zone) what else you had done e.g. reposting the same answers that had been deleted and all the other things I picked up as mentioned above you will realize why it is all down here.

As I said at the time, the ifixit Answers forum is to help people to fix it themselves, not to send them to professional repair services. This is considered as free advertising for the repairer which is not fair to ifixit as it costs them to host the "free"website for everyone to use.

by

Yeah i did recognize the problem also i was not ignoring it i have a extension called gmail notifier just from the name you can tell what it does at that gmail notifier was sending notifications and they were from ifixit i got the same notification 6 times so i knew something is wrong also 1 comment was marked as spam i'm guessing that was you or irobot did it you know the rest Thankfully nobody will need to be banned.

by

@pencetenmosioc - As @jayeff stated we love people who know their stuff to help in answering questions! And if they appear by their replies to be lost, you can point them to your info card which gives them your contact info, as an example: Jimfixer. The more info on your skills the better as well as your map location so people can find you if they are local to you.

We try to point to iFixit's parts whenever possible, otherwise we try to stick with major part houses or the vendor them selves. If you know the part number post it as well.

Hi @sarahw ,

Our friend (see my post Jun 16) has been busy over the last month or so, creating “guides” with what I think are reviews.

I’m not sure how to handle this.

I want to delete all what is written under the guide title as it makes it difficult to answer a question that has this device linked because you have to scroll to the bottom of the page to find the answer box. But I don’t want it to seem to the author that I’ve removed it all because of what has recently occurred.

This is not the only guide that this user has created and done this sort of thing to.

Also it is a bit misleading to start the “review” with OUR VERDICT. To me it could be read that it is ifixit’s review of the device which obviously is not the case.

You may be busy sorting all this out ;-)

You maybe should add an 800 or something word limit on them?

The example above was about 1600 words, more than half of that shouldn't be needed for a normal summary.

by

@eke0909

When creating a guide it does recommend that there is a 1-2 "sentence" summary for the area

Maybe it should be a character limit and not a word limit.

There's a 1024 character limit on "Comments" already so it shouldn't be too hard to implement

Be nice to have some plagiarism checking software though, as it seems too good when reading it ;-)

Cheers

by

Ohh, I forgot that it was said like that. (I haven't written a summary and it was a while ago I read how to do one).

Then it really should be a limit, a character limit is probably better since that's what the rest of the website is using. I just think it's hard to know about how long something is in characters because I'm used to being limited by a number of words. :D

by

Hi @jayeff and @eke0909, thank you for the post and the suggestions. I've taken care of the device page and I will see what we can do about limiting the number of characters for the summary. We appreciate your input!

by

Hi @jayeff and @eke0909, just a heads up, we're banning that user temporarily (1 month) however we're leaving those long summaries up for a little bit in order to show the Devs what is going on. Please continue to send us those pages if you see them but don't delete them because we need the proof so maybe we can change the rules on character limit like you suggested. Thanks for your help!

Hi @sarahw

Looks like he got annoyed yesterday (25/06) and decided to submit all these before the ban came into effect. Definite cut and paste plagiarising job given the timing between each modification to or creation of a guide intro.

Hopefully this will be enough proof for the devs

Have fun ;-)

Hi @sarahw ,

Just curious on this one.

This user 3013970 (don’t want to attach link to show as to not alarm if I’m way out of line) has been gaining heaps of rep points for a while now.

Good luck to him/her? but when looking at the activity page for the user, a lot of them are for “modified device” and then “approved admin” activities. When going to the device(s) to check its’ History as to what has been “modified” the user doesn’t appear as a contributor to the page. With a lot they haven’t been touched for years.

As I said I may be way out of line on this but I find it curious as to what has been “modified” if anything as nothing is apparent

11 Comments:

From what I can see with my limited view, I don't see anything off about the gain - yes, it's higher then the majority and there may be something going on behind the scenes, but I can confirm even I get more of my reputation from the guides and device pages then I will likely ever get in Answers.

For Answers, the rough napkin math for points I've gotten is 30,084 (16,404+11,750+1,630+300). For guides, 28,750 (13,269+8,048+7,332+60+41). As we all know since the Answers accept rate horse debate is dry glue, people mark guides as finished more often then they will ever accept an answer in Answers so that's where the points are. Hence why I prefer to make my points in guides - it's easier there, but I will still split time between guides and Answers. I'm short 1,334 points to break even between guides and Answers and I can tell you with reasonable confidence the points are almost certainly going to be made by guides and there will be a marginal points lead for guides.

I think this person may be specializing there for that exact reason based on what I have access to and they need to diversify for the sake of not being accused of it by someone less understanding. This is why I don't make my points solely from guides, as that would be a flag for someone to accuse me of cheating.

by

@nick

I'm only asking because I am not concerned about the Rep per se it's just that the amount amassed in such a short time was very high and took my interest. e.g. >48000 points for 1 month - outstanding don't you think given #2 on the list is only 5000 ;-)

I was just curious that the user's activity shows modifications to a lot of different device pages in a very short space of time. each one followed shortly after by acceptance of the modification, (+50 pts every time) only seconds between each modification and acceptance for each different device page.

Yet when looking at the "History" for each device page that was "modified" there is no record of it having been done or none that I could find on the page anyway. Some have not been altered for years.

In saying that any alterations that have been done usually have user iD s attributed to the alteration whereas with a lot that I checked there was no alteration and no such indication for this user.

As I said curiosity that's all There's most probably a very good reason for what has happened that I am not aware of so it will be a learning curve for me

Cheers

by

by

@sarahw Hopefully it's the scenario I described where they're making points on guides more.

by

Hello, user 3013970 here, aka Angel ;)

Where should I start?

First, yes, I've had quite a lot of free time lately due to the virus. I thought I could use it to translate more than I used to. I was doing at the beginning some guide translations into Spanish. Yes, I am adding close-to-zero content in English, except for catching up some "poop-alike" comments like mentioned earlier in this post ;) You can also check my activity in this part (Meta)

And in the "normal" forum, I also have around 270 guides translated, seen in the activity.

Lately, I noticed that the wiki was mainly in English, so I also started to work on wikis (there's no section in the "About" for that, I can't copy/proved it here)

But, in any case, I was completely unaware that there should be a balance between guides and answers' contribution (not to appear as "suspicious of cheating").

Continue on the next comment :)

Interesting that the last answer provided by the user was selected by the OP as the Chosen Solution 3 hours after the OP “commented” (later changed to update to question post by me so that others can see the “solution” that resolved the problem more readily) that the problem was the PSU and that the solution i.e. faulty PSU is not even mentioned in the link provided by this user
